How to Care for Your New Carpet: Tips from the Experts

A new carpet is an investment in your home. Follow these simple care tips to keep it looking and feeling like new for years to come.

Vacuum Regularly

The single best thing you can do for your carpet is vacuum it at least twice a week, and more often in high-traffic areas like hallways and living rooms. Regular vacuuming removes dirt, dust, and grit before it works its way deep into the fibres and causes premature wear. Use a good-quality vacuum with adjustable height settings so it works effectively on different pile depths. For the first few weeks after installation, you may notice loose fibres coming up — this is completely normal and will settle down with regular vacuuming.

Deal with Spills Immediately

Blot spills straight away with a clean white cloth — never rub, as this pushes the stain deeper into the carpet fibres and can spread the affected area. Work from the outside of the spill inwards to prevent it from spreading further. For most common spills, a mix of warm water and mild washing-up liquid is effective. Avoid using bleach unless your carpet is specifically bleach-cleanable — check with your supplier if you are unsure. For stubborn stains like red wine or ink, specialist carpet stain removers are available from most supermarkets and are worth keeping on hand.

Use Door Mats

Place door mats at every entrance to your home, both inside and outside the door if possible. They catch dirt, moisture, and grit before it reaches your carpet, significantly reducing the amount of debris that gets trodden into the fibres. This one simple step can make a noticeable difference to how long your carpet looks fresh and new. Choose mats that are easy to clean and replace them when they become worn.

Professional Cleaning

Even with regular vacuuming and careful day-to-day maintenance, carpets benefit from a professional deep clean every 12 to 18 months. Professional cleaning uses hot water extraction or dry cleaning methods to remove embedded dirt, allergens, and stains that household vacuuming cannot reach. This process refreshes the carpet fibres, restores the pile, and keeps your carpet looking and smelling fresh. It is a worthwhile investment that helps extend the overall lifespan of your flooring.

Protect from Furniture

Use furniture cups or felt pads under heavy furniture legs to spread the weight and prevent permanent indentations in the carpet pile. When rearranging furniture, always lift rather than drag to avoid pulling or stretching the carpet fibres. If you do notice indentations from furniture that has been in one place for a long time, try placing a damp cloth over the area and gently steaming with an iron — the fibres will often spring back to their original shape as they dry.
